UNIVERSITY of SOUTH FLORIDA

RESEARCH PARK LABORATORY SPACE
TAMPA, FLORIDA

1,300 to 7,000 Square Feet Interior Construction
Completed 2006 and 2007

Edge Architecture collaborated with the University, and the individuals and companies using the labs, to develop spaces with infrastructure tailored for their particular scientific processes and products.

The laboratory spaces included:

  • Wet labs for general use. These labs are used by researchers or companies that need temporary lab space, or a tenant that requires additional lab space for a specified time. The emphasis of these labs is user flexibility.
  • Shared fume hood lab. This lab was designed to house fume hoods for researchers or companies that don’t have a heavy reliance on fume hoods but need them for certain process. Again, the emphasis of this lab is user flexibility.
  • Robotics laboratories with intensive computing infrastructures.
  • An alternative energy laboratory with augmented power requirements.
  • A drug delivery research laboratory with nuclear magnetic resonance capabilities.
  • A prosthetics development and manufacturing laboratory with clean rooms.
  • A laboratory for the development and manufacturing of protein blockers and assay stabilizer tests for hospitals.

Each of these Labs had unique and specific requirements for the functionality of the space. The different types of research performed in each lab, determined the specific layout of the space, and the design of mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems that serve the lab. Our responsibility at Edge Architecture is to translate the needs of the research scientists, oftentimes expressed in sophisticated scientific language, into drawings and designs that engineering consultants, contractors, and building officials can understand and make a reality.
